Kinds of strategic behavior

Strategic behavior are mainly represented by events; therefore, analysis of a company centered on strategic behavior includes analysis of i) the behavior (=event) itself, ii) the patents used in the behavior (event), and iii) the counterparties of the behavior, if any.

Strategic behavior themselves have analysis contents of behavior related to strategic behavior under the "Events" main menu → Events (Strategic behavior) kind submenu.

Patents used in strategic behavior (events) have analysis contents of patents related to strategic behavior by kind of strategic behavior (events) under the "Patents" large menu → "Patents involved in events" submenu

For the counterparty of the behavior, there are analysis contents of companies related to strategic behavior by kind of strategic behavior (events) under "Related companies" menu → "Financial-litigation-transaction events" submenu.

Patent transactions behavior

Patent transactions itself

Patent transactions behavior include i) patent purchases, ii) patent transfers through M&A, and iii) strategic reallocation/realignment of patents within a group of companies.

Patent transfer through M&A is particularly important. An M&A is essentially the taking of stock (management control) of a defendant company, which means that IP often remains with the defendant company when an M&A occurs; however, the transferred IP from the defendant company to the acquirer is often an asset that the acquirer (usually a market leader) has a high strategic need for, especially if the IP is heavily self-forward cited or heavily cited by backward IP held by companies competing with the acquirer.

In cases where there is a strategic realignment/re-alignment between a group of companies, it is useful to view the realigned/re-aligned IP from an aggregate view, rather than in terms of individual IP.
